SURE FIRE TRAINING
I am Reverend Thomas A. Dingwall, a Certified Instructor and Range Officer with USCCA (United States Concealed Carry Association), located in Morrisville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
I had never intended on owning a handgun. My oldest son, who is in the military, kept suggesting (harassing maybe) that I should get one. One day I was reading in the Bible, the Gospel of Luke, where Jesus told His disciples to take their purse and sword and if they didn't have a sword sell their coat and get one. I felt that was my confirmation to get a handgun.
Being raised in a time when country boys learned gun safety from their fathers, scouts and 4H, I felt comfortable in having a firearm available. From the time I was able to hold a rifle I was shooting. Gun safety was drilled into my head, but now I have a handgun. Are the rules the same, more, better? I obtained my concealed carry permit and then sought a handgun training. I went online to see what was available and I came across USCCA. I saw there a need for me to have training and legal protection, but they offered much more. USCCA also provided incites on laws, handgun types, options and training. Around the same time a friend of my invited me to a training called "Israel Combat Pistol Training" through Rubicon by Mark Booher (Now Barritus Defense). USCCA's training was invaluable and adding the field training with law enforcement through Barritus took it to a whole new level.
As I became more proficient, I became aware of others, who owned handguns but didn't know safety rules, how to treat a handgun, hold a handgun, or even aim a handgun. There was one individual who invited me to their range so they could show me how good they were. The first thing they did is put the target a few feet in front of them (they had a full size 9mm pistol with a 12 round magazine). I stopped the person and said no, move the target to 21 feet. After this person had fired 6 rounds, I tapped the person on the shoulder and asked the person to put the weapon down. Not one of the bullets had hit the target but the ceiling tile was falling down. After unloading the weapon, I asked the person to show me how they aimed their weapon. They just picked it up pointed and shot. After a few instructions, they were at least hitting the paper.
That and many other similar incidents prompted me to find a way to be a certified handgun trainer with a great organization, USCCA.
